Distillation and Distillation Equipment

In simple language, distillation is a method of separating the components of a liquid mixture by using the process of boiling and condensation. The equipment used in the process of distillation is known as distillation equipment. Distillation is considered a unit operation because it comes under the larger chemical process and it can only be done with the help of distillation equipment. Distillation equipment has various uses commercially. For example, water is distilled by distillation equipment to remove impurities such as salt from seawater. Distillation equipment is also used for fermentation solutions to produce alcohol and acids. Distillation equipment is a distillation machine which is used to recycle the solvent.

Distillation equipment is used for the distillation of the solvent which is done by outermost heating the solvent. The distillation equipment used for heating is filled with diathermia oil. The vapors produced by distillation equipment are further transferred to a condenser.  The solvent is collected for reuse. Distillation is one of the most reliable and cost-efficient methods for chemical separation. It is widely used in industrial processes. There are so many industries that use distillation equipment for the process. Some of them are general chemical production, petrochemicals, renewable fuels, pharmaceuticals, food processing, mining, agriculture and many more.

Distillation involves both heat and mass transfer. Although, there are other procedures also available in the market for the separation of chemical compounds distillation has proven the most reliable and economical procedure. The distillation equipment is designed on the basis of relative volatility and activity coefficients. Relative volatility is the measurement of the vapor pressures of the components. The activity coefficient is used for the calculations of the final deviation. The design of distillation equipment is a very important task to make the procedure successful. Qualified engineers are used for the designing of distillation equipment.

Some of the types of distillation process are simple distillation, short path distillation, molecular distillation, fractional distillation, thin-film distillation, and spinning band distillation.
