THE TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN OF DISTILLATION EQUIPMENT

Distillation is considered to be one of the most cost-effective and reliable methods of separation which is done chemically.

The process of distillation is a form of unit operation which is widely used in various industrial applications.

There are basically two types of distillation equipment available in the market which are popularly used in various industries, Field erected distillation equipment and Modular distillation equipment. Here is the list of the industries which are supported by this two-distillation equipment mentioned above.

   Petrochemicals

   Pharmaceuticals

   Mining

   Chemical Production

   Renewable Fuels

   Food Processing

   Agriculture

Distillation is a chemical process of separation which involves the methods of mass transfer separation and heat transfer separation.

THE TYPES OF CHEMICAL SEPARATION PROCESS

When it comes to the separation process of distillation, then there are basically two types of the separation process, the Single-stage separation Process, and the Multiple Stage separation Process. Before moving further to the specifications of the distillation equipment and the layout of the distillation equipment design, it is important that we know the basic difference between the two types of separation processes.

   Single Stage Separation Process

The process of Single-stage separation process is more like an evaporation process which is also known as flash distillation. It involves the removal of the volatile component from the solution through heating or boiling.

   Multiple Stage Separation Process

This process is also a kind of evaporation process but in several stages. In this process the design of the sequential process is followed. This helps in allowing the more efficient method along with minimal waste.

THE BASICS OF THE DISTILLATION EQUIPMENT

When it comes to the basic definition of the distillation process, then distillation is a chemical separation of the components present in a solution according to their volatility property.

For achieving the process of distillation, the transferring of heat is used so that the liquid and vapor present in the solution can interact with each other.

The interaction between the liquid and vapor is done in a counter flow consideration inside the vertical column.

As discussed above, the chemical separation of the components is done with the help of their volatility property. The volatility is the vapor pressure of the component.

THE DESIGNING PROCEDURE OF THE DISTILLATION EQUIPMENT

Although every model of the distillation equipment follows a different pattern of designing but there are some of the standard practices which are followed in every type of distillation equipment.

Let’s take a look at those general steps.

The first step is you will have to evaluate the equilibrium data of the vapor-liquid.

After evaluating the data, you will have to calculate the stages of the equilibrium which are required.

You will have to decide on the tray hydraulics.

After determining the tray hydraulics, you will have to select the accurate tray for the efficiency of the distillation process.

The factors which determine the designing of the distillation equipment are following-

The purity of the product should be high

The distillation process should be cost-effective

The process of multicomponent distillation can be processed.

The Distillation System For Water For Injection Options

Distillation systems have always been the only option for Water for Injection (WFI) options for many years. The Water for Injection option is used to operate the biopharmaceutical business and to supply the products to Europe. However, the traditional method of Water for Injection has changed in the year 2017 after the European Pharmacopoeia modified it and brought it to the Japanese Pharmacopoeia and the United States Pharmacopoeia. After that, the new methods have been permitted from there. The revised methods have allowed the manufacturers to get more options for the distillation system, either from distillation or from alternative purification methods

THE METHOD OF REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO)

Both the distillation system methods produce an equivalent quality of water. The newly developed distillation system method includes the membrane system Reverse Osmosis (RO) which is connected to a secondary membrane system known as ultrafiltration. The basic function of a distillation system is to turn the water into a vaporous form. The vapor is then further condensed so that the purified water can be obtained. However, when it comes to the Reverse Osmosis (RO) process, then it doesn’t involve the concept of hot purification method. The Reverse Osmosis membrane system doesn’t include heat. Therefore, it is also known as a cold Water for Injection (WFI) system.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT SYSTEM

As we discussed above, there are basically two methods of distillation systems and choosing the right method system is very important. In both the methods, the purified water will be produced for meeting the standards of Water for the Injection process. However, the decision of choosing the type of distillation system depends on various things. Following is the list of the dependent factors.

ü The the requirement of the operation

ü The distillation equipment and system

ü The availability of space

ü The the budget of the organization

ü The previous results and experience of the type of distillation system the organization used.

Distillation is considered to be one of the most effective methods of purification and it is widely used in various applications.

THE DIFFERENT SYSTEMS USED FOR WATER FOR INJECTION OPTIONS

There are various systems of filtration and distillation which is designed for fulfilling and meeting the requirements of the WFI applications.

Ø Polaris System

Polaris is one of the high capacity distillation systems which is used to produce the Water for Injection (WFI). The Polaris system helps in offering a large number of designing options for electrical heating and steam heating. The options include vapor compression distillers, clean steam generators, and single and multi-effect distillers.

Ø Orion System

The Orion products are one of the best solutions for those who are looking for a cold WFI (Water for Injection) option. The Orion system is a generation system of purified water with the technology of skid-mounted multi-technology.
